Russia Eyes Banning Animal Impersonation

A new law is being considered in Russia that would make it illegal to promote a specific type of subculture called “quadratics.” Quadrobics is a group where young people pretend to be animals, like horses or cats, by crawling on all fours and making animal sounds. This subculture has become popular because of videos on TikTok and YouTube.
Some Russian lawmakers want to make it a crime to promote quadratics, and they also want to punish the parents of young people involved in this subculture. They say quadratics can adversely affect young people’s mental and social development. Psychologists say that young people may join quadratics because they feel lonely or unsupported, and they believe that these young people should be encouraged to participate in activities that help them grow intellectually and physically.
According to experts, quadratics is a simple and easy way for kids to take a break from real life, especially during puberty. A therapist named Antonina Perekrestova said earlier this year that most of the people who do quadratics are teenagers who don’t get enough attention and support from their parents and teachers. She noted that quadrobers often have trouble talking to other kids and need to do things that help them learn and stay active so they don’t have problems making friends in the future.
