Honduras cancels extradition treaty with US

Honduras’ president, leftist leader Siomara Castro, accused Washington of influencing Honduran politics in a social media post. At the same time, Honduras’ foreign ministry said Wednesday it had decided to cancel a more than 100-year-old extradition treaty with the United States in response to the US ambassador’s remarks.
The U.S. Embassy in Honduras did not respond to a request for comment on the decision to cancel the extradition treaty.
Honduras is a staunch supporter of Venezuela’s socialist government.
Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been extradited to the United States under an extradition treaty where he was convicted of drug trafficking.
Former Honduran police chief Juan Carlos Bonilla was also extradited to the United States under an extradition treaty.
