Why AGI Lacks Ontological Grounding: A Philosophical and Scientific Critique

Proponents argue that scaling computational power, data, and algorithms will soon yield such systems. However, a deeper examination reveals a fundamental flaw: AGI, as conceived, lacks ontological grounding. Ontology, the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of being, asks not what a thing does but what it is — its mode of existence, final cause, and relationship to the world.In this article, I argue that AGI is ontologically incoherent. Human intelligence emerges from a living, biological host with intrinsic telos (purpose), dissipative self-maintenance against entropy, embodied causal agency, and historical temporality shaped by decay. Non-biological systems, no matter how advanced, cannot instantiate these properties. They remain artifacts — sophisticated simulations of intelligence — rather than a new mode of being. This critique draws on Aristotelian philosophy, evolutionary biology, thermodynamics, and systems theory to demonstrate why AGI does not and cannot exist in the form promised.

The Intrinsic Telos of Intelligence: Purpose as Being-for-Itself

Aristotle’s concept of telos — the final cause or “for-the-sake-of-which” a thing exists — is central to understanding intelligence. Human intelligence is not a detached algorithm; it is the emergent adaptation of a biological organism whose telos is survival and reproduction. The brain fights thermodynamic decay through metabolism, repair, and adaptation, but inevitably succumbs to aging, forgetting, and death. There is no unified, self-powered agency — no metabolism fueling direct interaction with matter. Without embodiment as a biological host, AGI cannot cross from information to causality. It simulates agency but never instantiates it.

The Requirement of Life as Host
