Ali Riaz: Constitution should be rewritten

Ali Riaz, a Distinguished Professor of Politics and Government, emphasized the need for a constitutional assembly to rewrite the constitution and limit the Prime Minister’s term to two terms. He highlighted the limitations of amending the constitution and proposed a Constituent Assembly as a way of rewriting it. He said this at a press conference organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) at a city hotel on Thursday. After delivering his keynote speech, the CGS adviser talked about the country’s constitution, democracy, elections and other issues during the question-answer session.
Ali Riaz emphasized the need to prevent the concentration of power in one hand and called for urgent reforms. He also mentioned the spread of misinformation by the Indian media and advocated for presenting true facts. Additionally, he highlighted the call for dialogue by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, to establish sustainable democracy and justice through various dialogues involving civil society and experts from different sectors.
Ali Riaz announced that the CGS will hold a series of dialogues at national and regional levels over the next five months. Eight national dialogues will be held in Dhaka, covering topics such as the constitution, human rights, and justice for victims of law violations. Four regional dialogues will also be held. Riaz highlighted the politicization and destruction of state institutions during the 15-year one-person rule, including the judiciary, administration, and law enforcement agencies. He emphasized the need for reform and the challenge of holding free and fair elections. CGS Executive Director Zillur Rahman expressed the organization’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through these dialogues.
