Journalist Maruf Haider detained for exposing corruption

On the night of August 27, Maruf Haider’s wife and children were heading to a restaurant when soldiers reportedly picked him up. Later, a false case was filed against him at Kafrul Police Station in Mirpur, allegedly in retaliation for a report he published.
The news of Tk 400 crore corruption involving Jahangir Alam, the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s personal assistant, is being widely discussed across the country. Munshi Mahfuz Hasnat Kamrul, Jahangir Alam’s assistant, is alleged to have received millions of taka from a grocery shopkeeper, as reported in the daily newspaper Natun Somoy.
Munshi Mahfuz Hasnat Kamrul has been accused of threatening to kill the reporter, Maruf Haider, in various ways. Maruf Haider, the second accused in the case, claims that he and five others disguised in military uniforms were abducted and extorted by individuals posing as fake government officials, with an alleged extortion of Tk 8 lakh.
The entire family of journalist Haider is living in fear, as the plaintiffs are allegedly intimidating them. Maruf Haider’s daughter has stated that her father was falsely arrested by law enforcers and has demanded a fair trial of these incidents.
