Life-saving satellite tech available on your iPhone, Android

Hurricane Milton is nearing Florida, promising to bring damaging winds and potential flooding across the state.
In light of potential power outages and disrupted cell service, the ability to send a distress signal via satellite could be a lifesaver.
APPLE IPHONE
Apple’s iOS 18 update can be downloaded to iPhone 14 or later (all models) to allow users to use Emergency SOS via satellite to text emergency services in the event of a cell and Wi-Fi outage.
The feature also integrates with iMessage and allows you to send essential texts to your emergency contacts and family members if they also have iOS 18 installed.
To connect to a satellite, you must be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon.

Connecting to emergency services via satellite is only available on Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Google says the feature is activated once all the necessary software and APIs are updated and the service is registered with the satellite network.
Google Messages must be set as your default messaging app to use the service.
