Residents from cities in southwest Broward went to a Miami-Dade County meeting to voice their concerns about the plan to build a new waste-to-energy plant at the site of a decommissioned airport just south of the Broward County line. The site in question, Opa-locka West Airport, is near Okeechobee Road and Krome Avenue.

This plan has sparked anger among residents and officials in Broward cities like Miramar, Southwest Ranches, and Pembroke Pines, with threats of litigation. They feel it’s unfair for Miami-Dade County to impose something they no longer want in their own county onto Broward County.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava held a town hall in Doral regarding the incinerator proposal, while Mayor Wayne Messam of Miramar has been leading the opposition alongside environmental groups. He expressed concerns about building the incinerator near South Florida’s water supply.

Despite the opposition, supporters of the Airport West site argue that the site provides the best balance between cost, project timelines, and impact to residents and natural resources. The Miami-Dade County officials were expected to vote on the plan later that day.
