The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has canceled the decision of Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khastagir’s assignment as the new ambassador to Poland, who filed a case against Bangladeshis living in Malaysia for holding a rally supporting the anti-discrimination student movement. On September 25, the foreign ministry appointed Khastagir as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Poland. Director general and spokesman of the foreign ministry’s East Asia and Pacific, Toufiq Hassan, confirmed the information on Sunday afternoon.

Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has decided to appoint Khorshed Alam Khastagir, currently serving as the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Poland, said Bangladesh High Commission spokesman Tou Fiq Hassan.

During his tenure as deputy high commissioner to Malaysia, Khastagir filed cases against Bangladeshis who protested in support of the anti-discrimination student movement. He called the protesters “terrorists” at the time, and later, a case was filed under his supervision at the Kajang police station in Kuala Lumpur. In the leaked WhatsApp group of the Bangladesh Foreign Service Association (BFSA), an organization of foreign cadres, Khorshed Alam Khastagir also recommended the cancellation of the passports of Malaysian expatriates who supported the student movement.

Khorshed Alam Khastagir, a professional diplomat, became controversial for favoring the previous Awami League government during the anti-discrimination student movement. Expatriates reacted negatively to his appointment as the new ambassador of Bangladesh to Poland and demanded the cancellation of his appointment.

Khastagir is a professional diplomat of the 20th batch of BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre. He joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 2001. Before this, he served as the Director General and Director General of the Europe, European Union, and International Organization Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York and Counsellor at Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat, Oman.
