Bangladesh’s inflation has been above 9 percent for almost two years. Last month, it was 10.49 percent. Accordingly, Bangladesh’s inflation is now the highest in South Asia.

Economists say that the former government of Sheikh Hasina has taken various initiatives to reduce inflation, but it has not seen any effect on the market. The new government is taking some promising initiatives. If these are implemented, inflation is expected to come down.

Inflation in the country was highest in July last year during the quota reform movement. Although it is the highest in South Asia, it fell more than 1% in August.

Among South Asian countries, Pakistan’s inflation rate has been in double digits for a long time. However, the country’s economic crisis has already brought its inflation rate down to single digits. Last month, it was 9.64 percent.

However, a year ago, in August 2023, inflation in the country was more than 27 percent. At present, the inflation rate in Bangladesh is higher than in Pakistan.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the country’s inflation rate was 11.66 percent in July. Although the rate fell slightly in August, it remains in double digits. Last month, it was 10.49 percent.

Accordingly, Bangladesh’s inflation is now the highest in South Asia. Sri Lanka’s inflation rate was just 0.5 percent in August. The Maldives has the second lowest inflation rate, 1.4 percent. Bhutan has 2.04 percent inflation, Nepal 3.57 percent, India 3.65 percent, and Pakistan 9.64 percent.
