The government has decided to repeal the ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Family Members Security Act, 2009’, which was enacted to protect the family members of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The decision to repeal the law was made at the weekly meeting of the Advisory Council held at the state guest house Jamuna on Thursday.

After today’s meeting, a press release from the Ministry of Public Administration stated that the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed to repeal the ‘Security Act-2009’ for the family members of the Father of the Nation.

According to the decision of the previous government, the ‘Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation Act-2009 (Act 63 of 2009)’ was formulated and promulgated. Later, on May 15, 2015, a gazette was issued to provide special security and facilities under the said law. The law was enacted only to provide state privileges to members of a family which is a clear discrimination. After the mass upsurge of the student masses against discrimination, the present interim government has taken a firm determination to eliminate all discrimination.

As the parliament is currently dissolved, it is necessary to take immediate action in this regard and promulgate an ordinance to repeal the law, it said. In this context, the Advisory Council meeting finally approved the draft of the ‘Protection of Family Members of the Father of the Nation (Abolition) Ordinance, 2024’ subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
