Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is moving northward in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region early Thursday.

If the system develops further, it will be named Helene.

“This has the potential to intensify into a powerful hurricane rapidly,” said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter. “There is the potential that this storm could further strengthen into a major hurricane, which is a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale with maximum sustained winds of 111-129 miles per hour.

Residents from Louisiana to Florida’s West Coast were advised to monitor the system closely.
